President Buhari Splits Pipeline and Products Marketing Co

Nigerian president Muhammadu Buhari has split the Pipeline and Products Marketing Company (PPMC) into three new entitles. The PPMC, a subsidiary of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), is responsible for imports and distribution of oil products in Nigeria.

A first unit will henceforth manage the maintenance of 5,000 km of pipeline in the country. The second will take charge of the 23 tank farms under PPMC’s authority and the last will see to the sale of oil products to different traders.

President Buhari views the split as a way to streamline the company towards improving its services, which has been long characterized for petroleum product shortages and operational inefficiencies.

President Buhari had sacked the heads of the NNPC and its subsidiaries in August, subsequently appointing Emmanuel Ibe Kachikwu as the new NNPC Managing Director and Mrs Esther Nnamdi Ogbue as the Managing Director of the PPMC.

The PPMC, before the appointment of the current MD, had been rocked by a series of scandals concerning Crude Oil SWAP contracts which marred the previous reign of Haruna Omoye Momoh as head of the PPMC. The management of NNPC had on its appointment, immediately cancelled the subsisting SWAP contracts in August.
